12 Unique IKEA IVAR Hack Ideas to Transform Your Space

If you’ve ever seen the IKEA IVAR cabinet, you know it’s more than just a little plain. The IVAR is one of IKEA’s most hackable pieces precisely because it’s essentially a blank canvas. Solid pine construction, simple flat doors, modular sizing, and a price point that makes customization feel low-risk. It’s a DIYer’s dream.

I recently transformed two IVAR cabinets into custom office storage that perfectly matches the rest of my home office setup, and the result looks nothing like something that came from IKEA. In this post I’m sharing my full tutorial plus 11 more IVAR cabinet hack ideas spanning everything from bold painted finishes to stained stripes and cane inserts, so you can find the style that fits your space.

My IKEA IVAR Office Cabinet Hack

My home office needed slim, functional storage that didn’t eat up too much floor space. I already had an IKEA filing cabinet in a custom green-blue color, and I wanted everything in the office to feel cohesive and intentional, not like a random collection of furniture pieces that happened to end up in the same room. Two IVAR cabinets were the perfect solution. Slim profile, solid wood, and completely customizable.

What I Used

How I Did It

Start by priming with Zinsser BIN. Pine soaks up paint unevenly without it. Once dry, apply two coats of your chosen paint color, letting each coat dry fully between applications. I had mine custom color-matched to an existing IKEA filing cabinet in my office so everything coordinated seamlessly.

Next, attach your legs. I used IKEA MORABO legs on both cabinets to elevate it from the ground and avoid having to mount them on the wall. One thing to watch: measure your baseboard depth before drilling. Mine were pushing the cabinet slightly away from the wall and I had to reposition. If you’d rather skip legs altogether, wall mounting is a clean alternative.

Finish with your hardware of choice. I went with brown leather pull handles from Amazon because the warm leather against the cool green-blue paint adds a nice contrast that makes the whole thing feel custom.

Total time: one weekend. Total cost: just over $300.

11 More IKEA IVAR Cabinet Hack Ideas to Inspire Your Next Project

Now that you’ve seen my version, here’s a roundup of 11 more incredible IVAR transformations across a range of styles, budgets, and rooms. Whether you’re going bold with paint, adding texture with trim, or creating a built-in look with wallpaper — there’s an IVAR hack here for everyone.

1. Simple Trim & White Paint

Sometimes the simplest approach is the most effective. A clean white IVAR styled with a simple trim installed on each door proves that you don’t always need bright paint fancy pulls to make this cabinet look intentional. If you love minimalism, keeping the IVAR natural or white and focusing on how you style it can be just as impactful as a full makeover.

2. Modern Burgundy Cabinets with Horizontal Trim

The cabinet is painted a deep, rich burgundy that immediately makes it feel like a statement piece rather than storage- bold, intentional, and completely unexpected for a flat-pack cabinet. What really sets this hack apart though is the trim detail. Horizontal trim pieces have been added along the edges of the cabinet doors, giving them a paneled, custom-built quality that makes the whole piece look far more substantial than its IKEA origins.

3. Boho Arched Cane Insert IVAR

This IVAR hack is easily one of the most creative in the roundup and the execution is stunning. The most eye-catching detail is the arched cutout that spans both cabinet doors, split perfectly down the middle so that when the doors are closed the two halves form one complete arch. Inside the cutout sits a cane webbing insert that adds warmth, texture, and that unmistakably boho quality that makes a piece feel handcrafted and collected rather than store-bought. The cabinet is painted a warm beige- a color choice that feels grounding. Rounded legs finish the piece at the bottom, softening the overall silhouette and adding just enough elevation to keep it feeling light.

4. Modern Fluted Door IVAR

This IVAR transformation leans fully into clean, contemporary design and absolutely nails it. The cabinet is painted a crisp cream with no distractions, no color, just a pure neutral that lets the texture do all the work. Fluted molding runs vertically along each cabinet door, spaced generously apart rather than packed tightly together, which gives the piece a distinctly modern and airy feel. No hardware, no extra details, just clean lines, cream paint, and perfectly executed fluting. If your space leans minimal, modern, or Scandi, this is the IVAR hack to bookmark.

5. Sculptural Studded IVAR Statement Piece

This IVAR hack is less furniture makeover, more furniture art. A deep, rich dark stain sets the moody tone, but the real showstopper is the half circle detailing applied across the entire face and sides of the cabinet. Repeating rounded forms that catch the light and create the illusion of three-dimensional studs covering every surface. The effect is somewhere between architectural texture and sculptural art installation. Bold, dramatic, and completely unlike anything else in this roundup. This is the IVAR hack for someone who treats their home like a creative expression.

6. Natural Wood Arched Trim IVAR

This IVAR hack is the definition of quiet luxury. The cabinet is covered in a light, natural wood finish that lets the grain speak for itself- warm, organic, and completely unpretentious. Arched trim frames the face of each cabinet door, adding just enough architectural detail to elevate the piece without overcomplicating it. Circular legs at the bottom round out the silhouette beautifully, keeping the whole look soft and grounded. If your style leans minimal, Japandi, or nature-inspired, this one is for you.

7. Statement Hardware Upgrade

Beaded wood cabinet pulls are having a major moment right now and they look absolutely stunning on a painted IVAR. The sculptural, handmade quality of beaded handles adds so much warmth and personality to an otherwise simple cabinet. Pair with a rich warm stain or paint, and you have something that looks like it came from a boutique furniture shop.

8. Bold Color IVAR

If you have a space that can handle a statement piece, a boldly colored IVAR is one of the most striking transformations you can make. This mustard yellow version is a perfect example as it completely transforms the cabinet into a retro-inspired focal point that works beautifully in an eclectic living room or creative studio. The lesson here: don’t be afraid of color.

9. Geometric Door Design IVAR

For a truly unique and architectural look, a geometric grid or pixel pattern applied to the cabinet doors elevates the IVAR into something that looks genuinely custom and design-forward. This style takes more time and planning but the result is unlike anything else. It’s perfect for anyone who wants their furniture to feel like a real design statement.

10. Striped Stained IVAR

This is one of the most creative IVAR finishes I’ve come across. Using two different tones of wood stain applied in alternating vertical stripes creates a cabinet that looks completely custom and hand-crafted. The technique uses a lighter and darker shade of the same stain family to keep the look cohesive. The result is warm, textural, and genuinely beautiful. A perfect project for anyone who wants to try something beyond a solid paint color.

11. Mid-Century Modern IVAR With Dowels

Adding dowel or spindle detail to the IVAR doors is one of the most popular and well-executed IVAR hacks out there. The result reads as mid-century modern or Scandi-inspired and it looks incredibly high-end for the relatively simple addition of some wooden dowels, a stain, and tapered legs. If you’re comfortable with basic woodworking this is a beautiful project to try.

What Makes the IVAR the Perfect Hack Canvas

A few things set the IVAR apart from other IKEA pieces when it comes to hackability:

  • Solid pine construction — unlike MDF or particle board, solid pine takes stain, paint, and hardware modifications beautifully
  • Flat door panels — the simplicity of the doors makes them perfect for adding trim, dowels, wallpaper, geometric patterns, or hardware upgrades
  • Modular sizing — IVAR units connect together, which means you can create one long built-in looking piece by combining multiple cabinets side by side
  • Affordable starting point — at around $100 per cabinet, the risk of customizing feels manageable. If a technique doesn’t work out you haven’t lost a fortune
